The 1981 U.S. space stamps had their first day of issue at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. A small supply was flown into Houston that same day, applied to covers, and cancelled on the first day at the Main Houston Post Office. This gave Houston the designation of an "unofficial" first day city for these stamps. Houston is the site of the Control Center for Space Shuttle flights and all of the other manned U.S. space missions.

Issued May 21, 1981, Houston, Texas.
